# Celestials - Modular Cross-Chain Usernames

Celestials is a decentralized identity system for the modular blockchain ecosystem, providing ENS-like usernames that work across multiple networks built on Celestia.

Celestials are modular usernames that natively simplify how users and developers interact with and across different networks with Celestia underneath and beyond. Your ID resides on Forma but works across all supported networks.

## How It Works

1. Auction System: The first bid starts an auction for an ID, subsequent bids reset the timer
2. Cross-Chain Identity: Once acquired, your Celestials ID works across all supported networks
3. Modular Architecture: Built on Celestia's modular blockchain infrastructure
4. Fair Distribution: Transparent auction system ensures fair access to usernames

## ID Format

- Suffix: All Celestial IDs end with “.i” (example: alice.i).
- Allowed characters (label before “.i”): letters (A–Z, a–z), digits (0–9), and underscore “_”.
- Length:
  - The label before “.i” must be at least 1 character.
  - Maximum length is 64 characters.
- Examples: alice.i, bob_42.i
- Not allowed: spaces, emojis, or special characters other than underscore; no additional dots or hyphens in the label.

## How Celestials Works (excerpt)

Overview

Celestials are human-readable identities in the form of names ending with “.i” (like alice.i) that resolve to cryptocurrency wallet addresses across different blockchain networks. This creates a unified cross-chain identity system where a simple, memorable name can be used instead of complex wallet addresses.

Celestial Lifecycle

1. Available (Status: AVAILABLE)
- New celestials start as available for auction.
- Anyone can initiate an auction for an available celestial.

2. Auction (Status: AUCTION)
- Users participate in auctions to acquire celestials.
- Configurable durations and bid increments.
- Highest bidder at auction end wins.
- Some celestials may be reserved for specific users or giveaways.
- Bidding can extend the auction end time to prevent sniping.

3. Auction Ended (Status: AUCTION_ENDED)
- Auction completed but celestial not yet claimed.
- Winner has a claim period to finalize ownership.
- If not claimed in time, the celestial may become available again.

4. Owned (Status: OWNED)
- Celestial is claimed and actively owned.
- Owner can add/remove addresses per chain, set for sale, renew to extend expiry, or revoke.
- An NFT represents ownership.

5. On Sale (Status: ON_SALE)
- Owner can list a celestial for a fixed price.
- Purchase transfers ownership immediately.
- Status returns to OWNED under the new owner.

6. Expiry and Grace
- Celestials have expiry periods (typically ~365 days).
- Grace period (e.g., ~30 days) allows only the original owner to renew.
- Resolution may be disabled during grace.
- If not renewed, the celestial returns to AVAILABLE.

7. Revocation
- Owners can permanently revoke a celestial (irreversible; cannot be renewed or reused).

Address Verification Statuses

- NOT_VERIFIED
  - Address added but ownership not proven.
  - Lowest trust; may be filtered in some queries.

- VERIFIED
  - Address ownership is cryptographically proven via chain-specific methods (e.g., ECDSA for EVM, Secp256k1 for Cosmos, Ed25519 for Solana, etc.).
  - Higher trust and priority in resolution.

- PRIMARY
  - Only one celestial can be the primary owner of any address+chain combination.
  - Verification makes the address PRIMARY for that celestial; any previous PRIMARY for the same address+chain is downgraded to VERIFIED.
  - Used by default in reverse lookups.

Resolution Priority (summary)

- Celestial -> Address (for a specific chain): PRIMARY → most recent VERIFIED → most recent NOT_VERIFIED → null.
- Reverse lookup (Address -> Celestial): returns the PRIMARY celestial by default; verified others may be returned in some queries.
